COFFEYVILLE – A late lead for the Seward County Lady Saints did not hold in a 58-56 loss to the Coffeyville Red Ravens at Nellis Hall on Wednesday evening.
Freshman A'Neya Chambers knocked down a three to put Seward ahead 54-51 with 1:54 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Saints turned the ball over on their next two possessions while Coffeyville got points on their next two trips down to take a 56-54 lead. Coffeyville swiped the ball away from Seward with seven seconds left and put a layup in to take a 58-54 lead. Seward's Avery Marchino hoisted up a long two at the buzzer that went in but the Lady Saints fell by two.
Seward (14-7, 9-6 KJCCC) dropped its second consecutive game and fifth straight to the Red Ravens (17-4, 11-4). The Lady Saints return home to host the 20th-ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Saturday at 2 p.m. Billy's Ayr Lanes is the game sponsor, and tickets can be picked up at Billy's, Flooring America and the KSCB office.
The Lady Saints led 17-13 after the first quarter despite trailing 13-7 with 2:34 to go in the period as they ended the quarter on a 10-0 run with threes from Avery Marchino and Grace Posch helping the cause.
Seward mustered just eight points in the second quarter being outscored 15-8 and trailing 28-25 at the half.
Coffeyville opened the third quarter scoring the first four points to push ahead to 32-25. Seward countered with a three from Trinitee Holmes and a layup from Au'Rayona Seals to trim the deficit to two, 32-30. Coffeyville pushed its lead to eight, 41-33, at the 4:13 mark but from 1:46 on Seward scored the final eight points to take a 44-43 advantage into the fourth quarter. Chambers pitched in four points during the run.
Destiny Alexander scored the first four points of the fourth quarter pushing Seward's lead to 48-43. Coffeyville countered with a bucket but a Chambers three made it 51-45 at the 6:07 mark. Coffeyville tied it at 51 with 3:26 to play. They held the Lady Saints scoreless for over four minutes with Seward's next bucket being the same Chambers three mentioned before, their final bucket.
Marchino finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Alexander had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Chambers pitched in 12 points and six rebounds off the bench shooting 2-3 from deep and 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Seward was 18-50 (36%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three and 13-15 (86.7%) from the free throw line. They turned the ball over 17 times.
Coffeyville was 22-68 (32.4%) from the field, 4-27 (14.8%) from three and 10-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line. They turned the ball over 10 times. The Red Ravens pulled down 18 offensive rebounds leading to 18 more shot attempts than Seward.
