JOHNSON – Cora Avitia, 78, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025 in Johnson.

She was born Sept. 22, 1947 to Steven and Carmen (Lovato) Minjarez.

She married Hermilo Avitia in 1972. He preceded her in death.

She spent 29 years at Stanton County Hospital, where she served as the Head of Housekeeping.

Beyond her career, she was an influential and trusted presence in Johnson. She was always willing to lend a hand, often helping friends and neighbors with interpreting, important paperwork, applications and even tax filing.

She loved playing card games, especially poker. She also enjoyed dancing, moving with the same warmth and happiness she brought into every room.

Survivors include her children: Tina (Ernesto) Olivas, Alicia (Juan) Gonzalez, and Gildardo Avitia; siblings: Johnnie Minjarez, Arthur Minjarez, Pauline Gallegos, and Hope Martinez; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Lucy Salinas and Connie Archuleta.

• Funeral services took place Monday, Nov. 17, 2025 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, with Reverend Eric Gyamfi presiding.

Burial took place at the Stanton County Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Cora Avitia Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
