Rodney “Rod” Alan Riley, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026 in Liberal.

He was born May 10, 1969 to Leo and Linda (Jackson) Riley. 

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1987. He furthered his education at Kansas State University.

He married Gay Compton July 11, 1992. She survives.

He was the owner of Elite Motors in Liberal.

He was a passionate golfer and found joy and camaraderie on the golf course, often spending his leisure time at the Liberal Country Club.

He maintained a strong connection to Kansas State University and was a proud member of the Alumni Association.

Survivors also include his parents; son, Cameron Alan Riley and Ruth Nunez of Kansas City, Mo.; brother, David Riley and wife, Heidi, Liberal;  father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Aneta Compton, Liberal; sister-in-law, Amy Johnson and husband, Craig; nephews, Blake Johnson and Jackson Riley; nieces, Shelby Williams and husband, Jacob, and Grace Compton; and great-nephews: Foster, Fowler, and Fulten Williams.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Tom and Vivian Riley, and Lloyd and Louise Jackson; brother-in-law, Owen Compton; sister-in-law, Rhonda Compton Tinney, and nephew, Gus Riley.

• Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026 at the Seward County Community College Gymnasium at 1801 N. Kansas Ave. in Liberal, with Reverend Jeff Mitchell presiding.

Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery. 

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026 at Hornung Family Funeral Home at 1212 W. 2nd Street in Liberal, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Liberal Country Club Irrigation Fund or the Gus Riley Scholarship Fund in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, KS 67901.
