A Satanta man is dead, and a teen suffered a suspected serious injury as the result of a one-vehicle fatality Sunday morning in Gray County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said just before 6 a.m. Sunday, a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 was eastbound on Kansas Highway 144 four miles east of Copeland.

KHP said the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with U.S. Highway 56 and struck a Kansas Department of Transportation post, crossed Hwy. 56, entered the south ditch and rolled one complete time. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle.

The driver, 22-year-old Edgar Adolfo Rios-Meraz of Satanta, was taken to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City where he died from his injuries.

The passenger, Yensin Mabel Servin-Shavez, 18, was taken to Wesley Trauma Center in Wichita where she was admitted with a suspected serious injury.

KHP said neither Rios-Meraz nor Servin Shavez were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
