Kansas Department of Transportation

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic changes are planned to begin the week of Oct. 13 to allow for the passing lane project on U.S. Highway 83 north of Sublette.

The four-mile project starts near the U.S. Highway 56/83 junction and extends north, ending two miles south of the U.S. 83/U.S. Highway 160 junction.

One-lane traffic in each direction along U.S. 83 will be shifted to the east utilizing the shoulders and the northbound lane. A speed reduction of 35 mph will be in effect along a section of the project, and an 11-foot width restriction will be in place.

The traveling public can expect minimal delays. KDOT will continue to provide updates on traffic impacts as construction progresses.

Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the contractor on this $15.5 million project, and it is expected to be completed in spring 2026, weather permitting.

For more information, contact Joel (Simon) Valdez, Area Construction Manager, at (620) 417-7706 or Yazmin Moreno, KDOT Southwest Public Information Officer, at (620) 765-7080.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit kandrive.gov or call 5-1-1. For updates on highway projects in Southwest Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/southwest-district.
