The Seward County Sheriff’s office has uncovered another phone scam, this time involving the department itself.
Sheriff Gene Ward said in a press release, someone unknown to his office is calling people in the area stating he is Sgt. Davenport from the sheriff’s office and telling people they have a warrant for whomever answers the phone, and they can take care of the warrant by paying a percentage out of their bank account.
“One of the people answering the call stated they would just go to the sheriff’s office and pay the fine,” Ward said. “The caller advised no, they will just arrest you.”
Ward said he would like the public to know, the sheriff’s office will never call a person to tell them there is a warrant out for them and to send money, get Dillon’s cards or prepaid cards.
“Merry Christmas, and if anyone ever receives a call like that, please just hang up the phone,” he said.
