Liberal Memorial Library has been in the midst of some changes, and recently, a new face joined the staff as the children’s librarian.

Sara Munn began in the role earlier this summer after working as the library director at the Plains Community Library. So far, Munn said, the job has started off really well.

“Summer Reading has kicked off with a bang and I am enjoying getting to meet all the new faces.  We have been having so much fun with our summer reading programs, and we have a lot going on for the rest of this month,” Munn said. “Getting to know the kids through Story Time and with our summer programs has been absolutely awesome.”

Munn also talked about her start in the library field.

“I was going back to school while working for USD 483 when the opportunity came up for me to be the library director in Plains,” Munn said. “I have always loved reading, and when I was younger I had been a volunteer at my local library in Plains. I decided to change my career path and I started working in the library, and it felt like I had found my passion.  Then, in 2023, I graduated from the Kansas Applied Public Library Education Program also known as APPLE, and here I am now. I am looking forward to making new connections and getting involved in the community.”

And even though her time in the role just started, Munn said she already has some ideas for the future.

“I love working with kids, I am looking forward to creating programs to help expand their imagination, creativity and foster a love of reading.  I want the library to be a place the kids are excited to come to,” Munn said. “One of my projects I am really excited about is starting STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Art, Math)  programming.  I also want to shape Story Time by offering different sensory features for the children to explore. I also hope to be able to provide outreach in the community by providing storytimes to local daycare facilities as well.”

Overall, Munn said, she is looking forward to being part of the Liberal community.

“I’m really excited to get to meet more people in the community and watch the children continue to work towards their reading goals,” Munn said. “The library is so much more than books.  We have a lot to offer and I encourage everyone to stop in and say hello. I would like to invite all the kids to attend  story time, it is on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. I also want to encourage the community to watch our Facebook and other social media pages for some great new and exciting programs and activities the library will be offering for area children.”
