On the evening of July 6, the Liberal Police Department responded to an accident involving a juvenile operating a scooter and a motor vehicle.

“While we do not share this information to cause alarm, the incident serves as an important reminder of the need for increased safety and awareness – especially during the summer months when children are more frequently outside and active throughout our neighborhoods,” Liberal Police Chief Chet Pinkston said. “The Liberal Police Department shares incidents like this not to assign blame or discourage outdoor activity, but to highlight the importance of traffic safety for all – motorists and young riders alike. Our goal is not to prevent children from being kids, but to help ensure they can enjoy their time safely.”

The Liberal City Commission will be kept busy at its next meeting this evening starting at 5:30. This evening’s meeting will be in the commission chambers at the Liberal Recreation Center at 950 S. Grant Ave.

After hearing a legislative update from Watkins Public Strategies, the commission will then be discussing a lobbying services agreement with the company.

Two Liberal residences were rendered uninhabitable, and a passenger car was ruled a total loss after what started as a house fire Saturday evening.

Liberal Fire Chief Kelly Kirk issued a press release saying around 7:15 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched to 204 Academy Ave. for a report of a well-involved house fire with a male subject entering the home and removing belongings.
