GUEST COLUMN, Tammy Sutherland-Abbott, Chair, Seward County Republican Party

In 2022, The Kansas Legislature passed, and Gov. Kelly signed HB 2717 which banned cities in Kansas from declaring sanctuary status.

State law requires law enforcement throughout Kansas to cooperate with federal agencies including ICE.

While Liberal does not elect leaders based on party affiliation, the Seward County Republican Party became aware of a city commissioner posting on social media how illegal immigrants should prepare for the possibility of "raids" by the Trump Administration.

The posting states, "If you are undocumented, it's important for you to take these steps to protect yourself, your family and belongings. There is a list of steps illegal aliens should then take should they be taken into custody."

While free speech is protected, an elected official should encourage complying with the law rather than offering advice and support to those who are not legally in our community.

Across the nation we have seen crimes committed by those in our country illegally, and even if that number is a small percentage of those violating immigration law, any crime committed by an illegal is a crime that could have been avoided.

The Seward County Republican Party expects a high standard from our elected officials and strongly condemns any action that condones, advocates, or supports violating state or federal law.

Seward County is a diverse county that welcomes anyone willing to follow the law. Anyone violating the rules does so at the risk of being deported. That's the law.

While discussions may be ongoing about immigration reform, the Seward County Republican Party expects all elected officials to comply with the law and encourages the community to do the same.

  • But yet your party voted a convicted felon into the Oval Office.Tell me again how CRIMINALS shouldn't be rewarded..... I'll wait...

    • Carol, you are so right.  tRump is a convicted felon.  How many undocumented people are convicted felons?  I know there are some & I agree, all felons should be deported, including tRump.  I would like to know which commissioner was simply trying to help, she will definitely get my vote.
