We continue our focus on the life of the Messiah, and with Easter approaching, I’d like to look at a few events during His last week on earth. While the three years of Jesus ministry were full and fast-moving, none were more so than the last few days, called Passion Week.

After the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the cleansing of the temple and several days of teaching, Jesus sought a place to be alone with His disciples. The writers of Matthew, Mark and Luke record directions to the disciples, how they were to remember the moment as they celebrated the Passover. But John, with his account, dedicated significant coverage to the words Jesus spoke, as He shared His heart with those He loved.

Over the past month, my time has been divided into thirds: Topeka, highway, home/campus. It’s not the ideal work-life balance, and it requires a lot of the team at Seward County Community College. It also requires a lot of my family. 

That’s why, at our most recent all-staff meeting, I shared the fact that my wife had called just before the session to remind me: get home at the agreed-upon time that night: We had a scheduled event at a local middle school. Because next year, we will be the parents of a middle-school student.

The old saying “last but not least” can be applied to “Conference” Week 11 of the Legislature in two completely opposite ways: It is certainly not the least important, but it is my least favorite. By way of explanation, many of the really big, important decisions we make necessarily occur right before adjournment; however, they come at a time when there is a feverish “rush” to get them done without the usual opportunity for extended thoughtful contemplation. For someone like me who is a “steady as she goes” regular-order type person, that pushes me to the edge of my comfort zone where things are simply not as calm and measured as I like them to be.

I don’t drink beer, but if I did I wouldn’t drink Bud Light. It’s not because of Dylan Mulvaney. It’s because of the marketing department at the company who decided to insult a group of people who were the customer base of their product.

They can highlight anyone they want, including a man who believes he is a woman.

The problem was something that has become a problem around the nation when the concept of DEI was introduced.

The company decided to hire a woman named Alissa Heinerscheid to become the vice president of marketing, the first female VP for the company in 40 years.
