Kansas No. 15 in spending, No. 36 in bang for the education buck

Some things never change – spending increases, achievement remains low, and Kansas has one of the nation’s worst productivity rankings (bang for the education buck).

A dollar spent in Kansas buys a lot more than a dollar in New York or California, so we adjust spending for comparison to other states using the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) cost of living index.

This past November, Kansas rejected the nonsense of the Biden-Harris Administration and demanded that Washington, D.C. restore common sense, secure our border, make America safe again, get our fiscal house in order, grow our economy, and get our country back on track. In a little more than 100 days, President Trump has done just that.

The only way to describe the start of President Trump’s historic second term is promises made, promises kept.

The excitement of graduation is everywhere in the Seward County Community College service area this spring. I felt it last week when I attended the Ulysses Chamber of Commerce Coffee. This was the fourth time I attended the event, and it was pretty incredible.

Fifteen students from Ulysses High School were honored for completing associate degrees with SCCC while also completing their high school studies. This is an incredible accomplishment, and families and friends showed up to support their students: the coffee had 150 in attendance.

Messiah: death is not the end

Since last November, we've focused on the life of Jesus the Messiah. This week we'll explore a little about the meaning of death, both for Jesus and for all who have lived since.

My wife and I met this week with a funeral home director and the young owner of a monument shop. We came away with plans for burial plots and a grave marker, with the intention of making things easier for our kids when we die. Traditionally, there's a funeral service and then a burial, and I've sometimes noticed that whatever comfort and encouragement came during the service may be dimmed at the grave. So, though I won't be around, I'm proposing that my body be buried before a service - with a focus on worship - and then time for a meal and fellowship afterward.

When students are involved in education-based activities, they are better. We all know the connection with peers, with coaches and sponsors, and to the community support their academic success as well as their physical health and mental wellness. However, can some students take it too far and be doing too much?

Earlier in April, I listened intently to the doctors, athletic trainers, school nurses and school leaders serving on the KSHSAA Sports Medicine Academy as they talked about a significant concern becoming more prevalent in their work with students. That topic is burnout. While the discussion was focused on supporting the many students who experience overuse injury, it also included students who have lost the love of the game. It was reported:
