Would it really be possible for Kansas’s at-risk program explode to a budget-busting $1.5 billion annually? I asked that question in June as something of a hypothetical, but that just took a step closer to become reality. Here’s a quick review of how that could happen.

At-risk funding in Kansas is currently based on eligibility for students’ qualifications for free lunch under United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines.

In late June, generic drug maker Teva Pharmaceuticals launched a generic version of Victoza, a blockbuster diabetes drug, in the United States.

Victoza is one of the first GLP-1 drugs  —  the class of wildly popular diabetes and obesity treatments that includes Ozempic and Wegovy  —  to go off-patent.

Within just a couple of years, GLP-1 drugs have rewritten the rules of diabetes and obesity treatment, offering patients the kind of sustained weight loss and glycemic control that was once the stuff of infomercial fantasy.

Time flows a little differently in higher education than it does in everyday life, so I am thinking a lot about “last year” at Seward County Community College even as we tackle the first semester of “this year.” It’s an interesting exercise and — in the case of 2023-24 — deeply rewarding.

That’s because the academic year we wrapped up in July was one of the best I’ve ever experienced. At a time when many in higher ed are feeling a slow, cold panic about the future creep in, SCCC was heating up to break records in enrollment and operations. Quite simply: We had an amazing year.
