The Seymour Rogers Apache football teams hosted Hays Thursday but couldn’t get a win.
The seventh grade Apaches fell 32-6.
The Apaches allowed an opening drive score to the Hawks after a five-minute drive, and the Apaches started strong with a pair of first downs on outside sweeps.
But the Hawks adjusted to take away the outside running game, and the Apaches ran out of downs.
The Apaches had solid drives during the game but couldn’t sustain them to reach the end zone.
Down 32-0 in the fourth quarter, the Apaches broke free on an outside run for 72 yards and a touchdown for the 32-6 final.
The eighth grade Apaches held Hays to a fourth and goal on the first possession of the game, and the Hawks attempted a pass which narrowly sailed over the hands of an Apache defender and was completed for a touchdown.
Hays built a 30-0 lead by half while the Apaches hurt themselves with holding penalties that killed drive after drive.
Despite trailing by 30 at half, the Apaches didn’t allow a point in the second half, and the Hawks had a chance for a late touchdown but the Apaches intercepted a pass near the goal line on the final play of the game.
Still, the Apaches fell short in the 30-0 loss.
The Apaches travel to Great Bend Thursday.
