After scoring a major win over Dodge City Tuesday, the Redskins suffered a setback Thursday when they dropped a Western Athletic Conference game to Garden City, 1-0.
The Redskins had a slow start on their home field Thursday, and the Buffaloes spent the first 20 minuets controlling the ball and keeping the pressure on the Redskin defense.
The Redskins struggled to get the ball by the Buffalo midfielders and didn’t have very many scoring opportunities early.
With the ball staying on the Liberal side of the field, the Garden City Buffaloes still did not have any opportunities to take a shot at the Redskin goal.
After a ball rolled out near the corner, Garden City was awarded a corner kick rather than a throw in, and the ball sailed in front of the Redskin goal. The first attempt was thwarted, but a rebound drifted to the left side of the goal to a Buffalo who drove the ball into the net to give Garden City a 1-0 lead with 31:28 remaining in the first half.
Garden City continued to control the pace with solid footwork, but the Redskins started to break through the Buffalo midfield and started to look for scoring chances.
Liberal’s first legitimate shot came high and hit off the top of the goal, and after a corner kick, a header attempt by Ariel Gaytan narrowly missed the upper left corner of the net and the Buffaloes were able to maintain a 1-0 lead at half.
Liberal continued to maintain a strong offensive in the second half and had several scoring opportunities, but the shots hit the edge of the goal or sailed around it, and time expired with Garden City escaping with a 1-0 win.
