The 19th-ranked Seward County men’s basketball team dropped a road contest, 74-69, at Colby Community College on Sunday evening.

The Saints (14-6, 9-5 KJCCC) entered the game tied for first place in the Jayhawk Conference and Colby (5-15, 3-11) was in last, but a tough shooting afternoon plagued Seward in the loss. Seward travels to take on Coffeyville at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Saints shot just 37.5 percent (24-64) from the field while Colby shot 45.3 percent (24-53). The Saints were 11-21 (52.4 percent) from the charity stripe, and Colby was 17-27 (63.0 percent). Colby outrebounded Seward 32-27.

Bailey Milligan scored a career-high 20 points for Seward. Quincey Kidd had 18 off the bench, shooting 5-8 from downtown. Antonio Williams Jr. had 16 points.

Colby’s D.J. Cason led all scorers with 23 points. Nana Keuthca had seven points and 14 rebounds.

The first half was low scoring for both as Colby held a 27-26 lead at the break. No team led by more than four throughout the half.

RJ McKinnie put in a layup to make it 31-30 Colby with 17:27 to go but Colby went on a 13-5 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a 44-35 lead. Seward responded by cutting the Colby lead to two with 8:20 to play on two Awit Mamer free throws. Again, Colby pushed its lead back. This time they went ahead by double digits, 13, when Cason put in a shot to make it 61-48 with 2:44 to play.

Seward battled, cutting the lead to four with 11 seconds to play off a Kidd three. Another Kidd three with four seconds to go made it 72-69 Colby, but there was not enough time for Seward to mount the full comeback.
