Special to the Leader & Times
The Liberal Wrestling Club traveled to Claude, Texas for the High Plains Shootout Wrestling Tournament. LWC took 9 wrestlers to compete at the tournament. More planned to attend but the club has battled with some sickness over the past couple weeks.
Julian Gonzalez and Isaac Torres both brought back first place trophies from the tournament. Gonzalez finished the day with one pin, one major and one tech fall.
Torres showed up ready to take the mat for his first tournament with the club this season. The two also had some fun at the end with Gonzalez challenging a ref and Torres wrestling a table worker.
“It was a fun day,” coach Krista Holcomb said. “Julian joked with a ref about wrestling him and the next thing we know, he is changing and putting on his wrestling shoes. I jokingly asked a table worker what he weighed and after some talking, he was excited to step onto the mat and wrestle Isaac. It was fun to go to another state, win matches and make friends with people down there for some light hearted fun at the end of a long day.”
Individual results are as follows:
Jason Fraire, second
Alyvia Holcomb, fifth
Elias Holcomb, fourth, one pin
Ian Holcomb, second, one pin
Alain Perez, second
Dominique Soto, second, two pins
Emanuel Zetino, second
LWC also had one wrestler who traveled to Tulsa Nationals for the weekend, Joshua Robertson.
As January comes to an end, Liberal Wrestling Club traveled to Cimarron Jan. 24.
The annual Battle in the West tournament will be Saturday at Liberal High School. The community is invited to attend this free admission tournament that starts at 9 a.m. and continues throughout most of the day.
