Donald Cheyne Sumner, 45, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026 at his home in Liberal.

He was born July 7, 1981 to Richard and Linda (Holt) Sumner. 

He received his GED and continued his education at Seward County Technical School, where he earned his welding certificate.

He worked as a welder for a tank manufacturing company.

He enjoyed playing golf, especially Wednesday Night Men's Golf, as well as softball and cornhole.

More than anything, he treasured time spent with his sons and loved being part of their activities. He loved gathering with family and friends at BBQs and group events.

Survivors include his mother; wife, Penny Rodriguez; sons, Zenner Trey Rodriguez Sumner and Kovin Michael Rodriguez Sumner; mother-in-law, JoAnna Lydia Thomas; and many other family and friends.

• Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026 at Hornung Family Funeral Home at 1212 W. 2nd Street in Liberal.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026 at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Liberal Recreation Center or the Liberal Animal Shelter in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, KS 67901.
