The Redskin baseball team started the season with a pair of games on the road and came away with a 1-1 record.

Liberal opened with an 8-5 loss to Ark City.

The Bulldogs started strong with three first-inning runs off starter Blayden Betts.

The Bulldogs added another run off Betts in the fourth before K. Miller came in relief and gave up two more runs before getting out of the inning, and Liberal trailed 6-0.

Liberal scored its first runs of the season in the sixth inning and cut Ark City’s lead in half by pushing three runs across the plate, but the Bulldogs answered with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Redskins scored two in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough, and the Redskins fell 8-5.

Eathan Hernandez, Eathan Olmstead and Betts each had tow hits in the loss, and Betts had a double.

After playing the Bulldogs and only committing three errors to Ark City’s one, Liberal committed five errors against Newton, but the Railers committed eight, and the Redskins earned an 18-12 win.

Liberal and Newton played even early, trading single ruins in the first and three runs each in the second for a 4-4 tie.

Newton pushed two more runs across the plate in the third, but the Redskins erupted for six to take a 10-6 lead.

Newton added a run in the fourth, but Liberal scored two more to take a 12-7 lead.

But the Railers rallied to push five across in the top of the fifth to tie the game 12-12 before the Redskins responded with two in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead 14-12.

Betts took the mound in the fifth to stop the Railer rally, and then he pitched two scoreless innings without giving up a hit, and the redskins added four more runs in the sixth for the 18-12 victory.

Betts earned the win.

Hernandez, Betts and Brynn Kappelmann each had two hits., and J. Santos had four RBIs.

Liberal travels to Holcomb today for a double header.
