GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's soccer team (2-5-1) hosted Oklahoma City women's soccer team (7-2-0) in a feisty affair with the Stars coming out victorious 2-0.

OCU started in style when Amelia Horsford found herself one-on-one in the 5th minute with Leylani Bernal on the right side of the box. Horsford edged ever closer to the goal before striking towards the near post with Bernal reading it and making a great save down to her left.

Just one minute later in the 6th, Reese Roberts threw the ball into the feet of Ali Daugherty who took a touch and struck the bouncing ball on the half-turn hard and low into the bottom right corner with enough power to beat Bernal from the edge of the box.

The next 20 minutes went on with OCU dominating the possession until the Aggies started to string passes together and work their way into the game. Panhandle managed just one shot on target in the first half while Bernal kept her team in the game by making five saves.

The biggest chance OPSU had was in the early stages of the second half. A great press from the Aggie team allowed Kiana Oldham to win the ball high and play it into the path of Stephanie Villagomez who took a shot from the top of the box, but the ball was too close to Candela Blanco in goal, allowing her to deny OPSU of a goal.

The Aggies kept the pressure on when in the 53rd minute. Celine Loraine had a chance to run in behind the Stars’ back line where she cut the ball on to her stronger right foot and struck at goal, forcing Blanco to make another save.

The Panhandle momentum subsided, and the match became physical with strong tackles from both sides occurring.

In the 85th minute, Louyse Souza had a free kick from over 40 yards out. She took a shot and found the top of the goal and beat Bernal to give the Stars a 2-0 lead. Souza then had another free kick from the right side where she found the crossbar and was denied from another.

Up Next: OPSU travels down to Texas Wesleyan University to face off against the Rams on Saturday, Oct. 3 with kick off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
