Law enforcement believe a car became airborne early Sunday morning, eventually killing a Liberal teen in rural Seward County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported just before 2 a.m. Sunday, evidence on scene indicated a 2009 Dodge Charger was eastbound on Road 9 and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of that road and U.S. Highway 83 and became airborne.

KHP said the Charger landed to the east of Hwy. 83 on Road 9 and lost control. The agency added the vehicle entered a side skid before entering the south ditch and rolled an unknown number of times prior to coming to a stop when it struck a power pole, eventually coming to rest facing east.

The driver, 16-year-old Augustus J. Riley of Liberal, suffered fatal injuries and was taken to Hornung Funeral Home. KHP said he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
