Transportation is a critical need everywhere, and in Southwest Kansas, some headway has been made with some of the area’s highways.
Much of that work concerns U.S. Highway 54 and the ongoing projects to create four lanes from Wichita to El Paso, Texas.
U.S. Highway 83 too is a critical corridor for Western Kansas serving a variety of industries including agriculture and energy.
The USD 480 school board again made quick work of its agenda at its most recent meeting Monday evening.
After approving Resolution M concerning the adoption of the district's organizational chart for the 2024-2025 school year, the board also approved an invoice from Linq in the amount of $20,633.75 for renewal of the cafeteria software.
The board then approved a bid from Rine Exterminating in the amount of $18,985 for pest control services for the 2024-25 school year before moving on to discussion of a contract for the new sign language interpreter.
Multiple churches in Liberal have been seeing new faces heading up congregations this year, and the First United Methodist Church is the most recent to make such a change.

Faith Tabernacle Church and the Liberal Ministerial Alliance will be hosting a free outdoor movie night Saturday in Light Park.
The movie shown will be “Unsung Hero,” which follows the true story of David Smallbone as he moves his family from Australia to the U.S., searching for a brighter future after his music company collapses. With nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music, David and his pregnant wife Helen set out to rebuild their lives.
The movie will start at 9 p.m., and there will be free refreshments provided.
Summertime is in full swing, and there is no greater reminder of that than temperatures flirting with reaching triple digits on the mercury in many areas.
This leaves many people trying to find a way to stay cool, and while swimming holes help somewhat in that regard, they do not help when trying to keep cool at home.
