County commission approves CMB for PRCA Rodeo

The Seward County Commission made quick work out of a short agenda Monday with only two action items on the docket.

The first action item concerned a temporary cereal malt beverage license for the upcoming Seward County PRCA Rodeo scheduled for Aug. 16 and 17.

“The purpose of this agenda item is to review and approve the temporary special event application for the Seward County PRCA Rodeo event,” Administrator April Warden said. “The Seward County PRCA Rodeo has submitted an application for a temporary license to sell cereal malt beverages for consumption on county property.”

USD 480 school board continues prep for 2024-25 school year

The USD 480 school board had an easy time at its last meeting of summer vacation Monday evening.

Up first came the administrator reports, starting with Superintendent Stephen Linkous, who praised the janitorial and maintenance crews for their work this summer.

Passing lane project begins in Meade County

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic changes for a passing lane project were anticipated to start Monday along U.S. Highway 54 from the Meade/Seward County line east for 1.5 miles west of Plains.

The traffic changes are needed to allow for passing lanes to be constructed.

Resurfacing to begin today in Ness County

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic changes for a resurfacing project along Kansas Highway 96 from the Lane/Ness County line east to the east city limits of Ness City are anticipated to start today.

K-96 traffic will be reduced to one lane in sections as they work on the 18.32-mile-long project area. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes as flaggers and a pilot car direct one-lane traffic through the work zone. The lane reduction will be marked by signs and cones. K-96 will be open to normal traffic when construction is not taking place.

PRCA Rodeo preps for August event

August in Seward County is known for many things, including the Five State Free Fair, which officially starts Wednesday, and the start of school, just a few more days away.

For the past decade, the month likewise has become rodeo time with the Seward County PRCA Rodeo taking place in mid-August. Though the rodeo itself is actually 11 years old, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the event in 2020, this year’s rodeo officially marks the 10th edition.
