How does LHS provide an advantage?

Liberal High School has had its Angry Red Advantage in place for multiple years and last Monday, LHS students and staff had the chance to share their thoughts about the program with the USD 480 school board.

“We really want to share these stories from students and staff about the Angry Red Advantage. They represent a variety of the different processes and procedures and initiatives we have in place at LHS, and they are the great things that have come from them,” LHS Principal Ashley Kappelmann said. “We talk a lot about high school being a four-year process, and with some of these students, you'll hear their journey and how they made it through some obstacles and challenges to get where they are today.”

SCCC brings ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ to life

This Thursday, Friday and Saturday, students in the Seward County Community College Drama Department, along with some local actors, will bring to life the story of a hapless floral shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.

Emergency personnel respond to Thursday fire

Drivers throughout Liberal Thursday had some minor visibility issues to deal with due to a grass fire.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at Pancake Blvd. and Western Ave. at approximately 11:45 a.m. Thursday, according to a release from Seward County Fire Chief Andrew Barkley.

Resurfacing project under way along U.S.-50 in Ford County

Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a resurfacing project along U.S. Highway 50 from east of Spearville to the Edwards/Ford county line, reducing traffic to one lane through the project area.

Motorists should be aware of delays of up to 15 minutes as flaggers and a pilot car direct one-lane traffic through the work zone. Signs and cones will mark the lane reduction. U.S. 50 will be open to normal traffic when construction is not taking place.

Venture Corporation, from Great Bend, is the contractor on this $1.7 million project, which is expected to be completed by June, weather permitting.

Senators Moran, Hirono introduce legislation to improve veterans benefits

U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) – members of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee – introduced the Honoring Veterans’ Legacies and Burial Benefits Enhancements Act to improve memorialization and burial benefits for veterans and their families.

This legislation would establish a nonprofit entity that would be able to accept private donations to be used to fund the Veterans Legacy Program (VLP). VLP issues grants to educational partners to conduct historical research projects on veterans buried in national cemeteries in their communities to then share those veteran stories through educational programming. This legislation would also make certain veteran burials are dignified and honorable, while also enhancing current burial benefits for dependents and historical Medal of Honor recipients.
