The phrase “for the birds” often has a negative connotation, but for Audubon of Kansas (AOK) Director Dr. Jackie Augustine, the phrase has a more positive point of view.

Earlier this summer, Augustine visited libraries throughout the Sunflower State, including Kismet Public Library, to talk to young people about birds and bird watching.

Augustine’s visit to KPL included a fun migration game and a reading of the book “Ruby’s Birds,” and participants also paid a visit to some of Kismet’s outdoors to look for some feathered friends in the neighborhood.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has significantly impacted the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities and late last week, the ADA reached a significant milestone.

Friday, Gov. Laura Kelly joined Kansas legislators, disability advocates, and stakeholders to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) becoming law.

Disasters and emergencies happen seemingly on a daily basis around the world, and whether it is a fire, flood, tornado, hurricane, blizzard, accident or any other emergency, in America, first responders are almost immediately on scene when the call to respond goes out.

In Seward County, Greg Standard has been responding to those scenes since 1988, when he began working as a volunteer with the Seward County Fire Department. Two years later, he became an EMT with the county’s EMS department, and in 1999, he took the opportunity by taking the position of the county’s Emergency Management director, as well as its assistant fire chief.

Liberal native and published author Steve Brisendine will be provding a poetry reading from his published works at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the Leader & Times studio, 16 S. Kansas Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Brisendine grew up in Liberal and graduated from Southwestern Heights in 1981. Brisendine worked as a reporter for the Southwest Daily Times in the 1990s before becoming a reporter for the Hutchinson News and then for the Associated Press.
