Fake check scams are not new, but the Garden City Police Department has learned of one targeting local contractors with convincing tactics and urgent requests.

A local contractor was nearly conned by someone posing as an out-of-town homeowner claiming their property needed work. The scammer sent a fake check for more than the job quote and tried to rush payment to a third party. That, along with the entire exchange happening over text, tipped the contractor off, who then reported it to us and wants to help warn others.

Moran and colleagues introduce bill to bolster aviation safety

Many changes were made to the aviation industry after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, and recently, some legislation was proposed to make some adjustments to one of those changes.

Wednesday, Sen. Jerry Moran, chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation, Space and Innovation, along with and Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), John Boozman (R-Ark.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) introduced the Spending Aviation Fees for Equipment, Guaranteeing Upgraded and Advanced Risk Detection and Safety (SAFEGUARDS) Act to make certain revenue collected through the 9/11 Passenger Security Fee (PSF) is invested in bolstering aviation and airport security.

The Mid-America Air Museum will be providing free admission all day Saturday to give locals a chance to glimpse at all the offerings of the museum as well as meet the authors of “Images of Aviation: Liberal Army Airfield” Lidia Hook-Gray and Connie Gray-Bowman.

The local authors put together the book highlighting Liberal’s role in fighting for freedom during World War II by training B-24 pilots at the Liberal Army Air Field.

The Five State Fair is rapidly approaching, and the fair festivities will include multiple concerts, including from “The Voice” contestant Savanna Chestnut.

Seward County Commission approves use of fund money to finish out WIC fiscal year

With cuts being made to the federal budget, many government agencies are seeing their funding being cut as well at state and local levels.

Those reductions include the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Women Infants and Children (WIC) program, and as is the case with many other counties, Seward County’s WIC program is feeling the pinch of these decreases.

Seward County Health Department Administrator Brie Greeson reported Monday, WIC will not get its fourth quarter funding from the feds.
