The Southwest Community Fiesta is rapidly approaching, and one of the big events that weekend will be the accompanying pageant, which is currently seeking contestants.
The Southwest Community Fiesta Pageant will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, and coordinators are looking for contestants for three categories: the Little Miss (ages 5 through 11), Teen (ages 13 through 17), and Miss (ages 18 through 30).
Thursday, the Kansas Corporation Commission approved a unanimous settlement agreement allowing Black Hills Energy to increase rates to recover costs incurred to provide natural gas service to customers. The agreement allows for a net incremental revenue increase of $10.8 million. The company requested an increase of $17.2 million in net incremental revenues in its application filed in February.
Under the terms of the settlement, residential customers with average usage (53.6 therms per month), will see an increase of approximately $5.96 per month or $71.52 per year. The new rates will take effect on Aug. 1, 2025.
Liberal’s city logo could see an upgrade after the Liberal City Commission’s next meeting this evening starting at 5:30. Tonight’s meeting will be in the commission chambers in the Liberal Recreation Center at 950 S. Grant Ave.
One of the last items of new business on the commission’s agenda will be the adoption of a new city logo, which has been in the works for a while.
The Five State Fair is just days away, and soon after that, the Seward County PRCA Rodeo will get under way.
Workers at the Seward County Fairgrounds are always busy keeping up with repairs and maintenance to buildings and land at the facilities, and Activity Center Director Linda Johnson said much of the work in the past year has been in the form of painting.
“We finally got our shop painted,” she said. “We had it sandblasted. We scraped and scraped until we could finally get it to where we could get some paint on it. We built the blocks first, and then we painted over that.”
This year’s Five State Fair is bringing some things back for this year’s festivities, including the popular Gospel Songfest.
This year’s Gospel Songfest will be headlined by Jason Waller and the CrossPoint Worship group, and Waller said he is excited for the opportunity to visit Southwest Kansas.
