A Liberal teen suffered a suspected minor injury Tuesday night in an accident in Lyon County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported shortly before midnight Tuesday, for an unknown reason, a 2008 Lexus L460 struck a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer from behind on Interstate 335 about 25 miles northeast of Emporia.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Liberal City Commission honored that at its most recent meeting Tuesday evening.
Vice Mayor Matt Landry read the proclamation.
“WHEREAS, breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting one in eight women during their lifetime; and WHEREAS, early detection through regular screenings, mammograms, and increased awareness significantly improves survival rates of life for those diagnosed; and WHEREAS, continued research and innovation have led to improved treatments and a greater understanding of prevention, offering hope to individuals and families touched by breast cancer; WHEREAS the City of Liberal recognizes the courage and strength of breast cancer survivors and honors the memory of those lives who were lost to this disease; and WHEREAS, local healthcare providers, community organizations and volunteers in Liberal continue to play a vital role in education, early detection and supporting those affected; and WHEREAS, during the month of October, communities across the nation united to raise awareness, share information and encourage individuals to take proactive steps toward prevention and early detection,” Landry read.
About 20 years ago, Seward County started a local office for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Women Infants and Children (WIC) program at the Seward County Health Department.
At that time, Tiffani Krause was chosen to head up that office as director. As of Sept. 29, she is no longer in that position, as she has chosen to retire.
Prior to and while serving as WIC director, Krause has had extra education in breastfeeding, and she got her nursing degree in 1987 at Seward County Community College.
She brought with her a wealth of experience in the health care field, including two years as a nurse’s aide, as well as a licensed practical nurse and registered nurse, at Liberal Good Samaritan Society.

The Christmas season might still be a couple months away, but a pair of local groups came together Saturday to begin making this year’s holidays a little brighter for some area families.
The Harbingers Motorcycle Club and Knights of Columbus teamed up for this year’s Toys For Tots run, and as coordinators tell it, the day could not have gone better.
“I think we did really well. We had about 24 motorcycles involved, and all of them brought toys, which was great. We've had better years and worse years, but with everything going on right now, I was really happy with how things turned out because it's all for a good cause and helping some children get toys at Christmas who might not otherwise get them,” Knight Chuck Lamberson said. “I'm really happy with how everything's gone, we've been going around to local businesses for sponsorships and door prizes and things like that, and I can't thank those sponsors enough for the help they provided. I also have to give credit to my brother Knights, they've all put in a bunch of hard work selling raffle tickets and talking this up and everything else.”
