Labor Day weekend is often a time many celebrate.

The Seward County Sheriff’s office reminds the public to celebrate responsibly and drive sober. 

The sheriff’s office joins law enforcement across the country to remind drivers to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

“You can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from Aug. 23 through Sept. 7,” Sgt. Bo Jacobs said in a press release.   

Drunk driving is illegal and deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a small amount of alcohol can affect one’s ability to drive. Drivers need to be responsible.

“If you drink and drive, you could get arrested or worse be involved in a traffic crash involving injury or death,” Jacobs said. “It’s not cheap either. A first-time offense can cost the driver upwards of $10,000 in fines and legal fees.”

Drivers should plan ahead this Labor Day weekend:

• If you intend to drink, don’t drive.

• Designate a sober driver

• Call a rideshare or taxi

• If your friend is going to drive, take away the keys and provide a sober way home.

• If anyone spots a drunk driver, call local law enforcement.
