Many law enforcement officers fall in the line of duty and starting next year, there will be a special day to honor them.

Tuesday, Gov. Laura Kelly signed Executive Order 26-07, establishing Kansas Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Day, to be observed annually on the first Friday of each May. The first Kansas Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Day will be recognized on Friday, May 4th, 2027.

“By designating Kansas Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Day, we recognize the commitment Kansas law enforcement officers show each and every day and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their state,” Gov. Kelly noted in a release from the State of Kansas. “The loss of a law enforcement officer leaves a profound hole in the hearts of their family, their department, and their entire community. While we can never repay the sacrifice far too many have made, we can make sure we never forget it. Kansas Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Day will provide an annual opportunity for state agencies, local governments, law enforcement organizations, schools, and citizens to participate in ceremonies and activities honoring officers who have given their lives in service to their communities and to Kansas.”

In addition, flags will be flown at half-staff across Kansas.

At the executive order signing, Gov. Kelly provided remarks that touched on the tragic line-of-duty deaths that have taken place in Kansas, including those mourned at the 2026 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony: Undersheriff Brandon Gaede, Deputy Elijah Ming, Officer Hunter Simoncic, and Sergeant Scott Heimann.
