Special to the Leader & Times Hugoton — The Liberal High School Girls Golf Team got their 2026 season started at the Hugoton Invitational Thursday at Forewinds Golf Course. Due to the expected heat, the tournament tee-time was moved up to 10 a.m. and was reduced to just nine holes. Junior Scarlett Carr, coming off an appearance at the KSHSAA 6A State Tournament last year, led the way for the Lady Red with a score of 50 for ninth place individually. Sophomores Aniya Stegman and Janelle Aquino, along with Freshman Ella Carr, all posted scores of 56 for a tie for 21st, only five strokes from 10th place. Janelle Aquino and Ella Carr were playing in their first-ever tournament. Senior Rylie Fries posted a 61 and Junior Valeria Gandara Vega recorded a 69. Liberal started strong, having three players in the top 10 after three holes, but they faltered late in the round.
