Carmeleta Kay Wares, 85, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025 surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 21, 1939 to Marvin and Freda (Hoskinson) Shepherd in Liberal.

She graduated from Liberal High School in 1957.

She married the love of her life, Bruce, Oct. 4, 1957. He survives.

Her employment included Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Builders Inc and Slawson Oil Company.

She loved attending high school class reunions and took great joy in planning trips and traveling with Bruce and their friends.

Her many hobbies included sewing, shirt painting, crossword puzzles, cooking and doll collecting.

Survivors also include five children: Christopher (Tammy) Wares, Pamela Hall, Jeffrey (Marie) Wares, Kimberly (Michael) Garvey, and Timothy (Kelly) Wares; nine grandchildren: Tawny, Carly, Traci, Jennifer, Joshua, Kristina, Amanda, Matthew and Ashley; nine great-grandchildren: Zoey, Mathias, Izabelle, June, Jayla, Jonah, Jacob, Aspen, Weston; great-great grandchildren, Joely and Jasper (on the way); beloved in-laws, Mary Ann and Stanley Kirk; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Amy and Rachel and their staff at Credo Senior Living and Gentiva and Heartland Hospice for the care they provided Carmeleta in her final weeks.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Deanna Donart; and brother, Danny Shepherd.

• Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2025 at Reflection Pointe Funeral & Cremation Services at 3201 S. Webb Road in Wichita, with family greeting time 30 minutes prior to the service.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2025 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at 1208 N. College Street in Winfield.
