KDHE joins effort to observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness month, a time to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many contributions of workers with disabilities. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is dedicated to fostering employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, while helping participants gain and maintain meaningful employment.

Kismet to host several fall events

Fall is in the air, and in the town of Kismet in October, signs of the season will be seen throughout the community.

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, Kismet Public Library and the KPL Foundation will host a benefit dinner.

“They’re serving chili and chicken noodle soup, and any donations will benefit the Kismet library,” KPL Director Suzan Nelson said. “Dine-in and carry out meals are available. That dinner is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kismet Pavilion.”

Liberal Black History Committee extends deadline for t-shirt design contest

For the first time ever, people in the Liberal community have the chance to design the Black History Month t-shirt for the month’s 21st anniversary festivities that will be going on in 2025. The contest opened Sept. 1 and the deadline for submissions has been extended to Oct. 20.

The Black History Month theme for 2025 is 'African-Americans in Labor,' and the goal is to highlight the accomplishments of African-Americans in the workforce throughout history. The designs must be submitted as a jpeg, and the contest is open to everyone.

Bee Jays to host annual business meeting

Everyone is invited to the Liberal Bee Jay Board’s annual meeting Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the North Fire Station.

The fire station is located at 110 W. 15th Street, and the meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

Will school board meetings be streamed? Not yet

The USD 480 school board could soon be taking another step toward streaming its meetings.

The board revisited discussion of the matter during its most recent meeting Monday evening, with the discussion taking up the majority of the meeting.

“There were multiple questions brought to us, including about costs and equipment and some of those details,” Board President Alan Brown said.
