Throughout the course of a school year, young people and faculty can be found in lunch lines and cafeterias awaiting their midday meal.

During the summer months, though, most students are left at the will of their parents, and in many cases themselves, to find something to eat.

Many school districts, including USD 483, have been helping out with that need for years, and starting May 28, the district will again be offering its summer meals program for youth looking for food at lunchtime.

Seward County Community College

The Seward County Community College Foundation has scheduled its annual Giving Day for Tuesday, May 21 – and it added a little grit to the one-day fundraising event. This year’s goal to raise $50,000 in 24 hours focuses on the SCCC Student Health Center. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the site just north of the Student Living Center.

“We’ve designated the money for this important project, and it just makes sense to get shovels in the dirt on the same day,” Sarah Thompson, SCCC Associate Director of Annual Giving and Alumni, said.

The City of Liberal now has a new slogan thanks to action taken by the Liberal City Commission at its most recent meeting Tuesday evening.

Updating the city’s slogan and logo has been a project in the works for some time now, and Tuesday’s discussion began with Director of Public Affairs Keeley Moree.

Tuesday, local leaders joined the Kansas Department of Transportation in cutting the ribbon on the latest four-lane project on U.S. Highway 54 at the weigh station east of Liberal.

After the ribbon-cutting, those on hand were invited back to the Depot for a lunch and to hear from local and state leaders about the importance of the project.
