August is right around the corner, which means it is almost time for the annual Five State Fair, which will officially take place Aug. 4 through 10 at the Seward County Fairgrounds.
As Five State Fair Board member Erin Atchley tells it, there is a lot to be excited about for this year’s fair fun.
Back-to-school time is rapidly approaching, and one item that should be on every student’s checklist is their back-to-school immunizations.
The immunizations are currently being offered at the Seward County Health Department (SCHD), and Registered Nurse Lesha Morlen said now is a good time to get those immunizations taken care of.
During summertime, many people take vacations, but many of those trips are centered around relaxing and taking a break from everyday life, all the while seeing some of the sights in the areas they visit.
New York City is a popular choice for vacations, and as many people do, a mother and daughter from Southwest Kansas traveled to the Big Apple to see some of the city’s sights, but they also were educated about some of those tourist stops.
The Allied Health programs at Seward County Community College got a big financial boost recently through a state grant that come with some help from some local and area hospitals.
SCCC received $28,000 from the Fiscal Year 2025 Kansas Innovative Technology Grant from the Kansas Board of Regent, and Vice President of Career and Technical Education Dr. Amber Jones said much of the money went to fund Apple Vision Pro VR headsets for virtual and simulated training, as well as help with teaching anatomy and medical technologyin a 3-D representation.
The roof at the Seward County EMS building has been dealing with a recurring leak issues related to the air conditioner for the past five to six years, and while the trouble primarily occurs during heavy rains, the situation has now become a significant problem.
At its July 7 regular meeting, the county commission unanimously approved a plan that included the following work:
• Remove pad and dig out area apply seal, replace concrete and recover with dirt – $3,750 to Maestro Concrete of Liberal
• Core drill two wall penetrations and reroute existing PVC vent to south wall – $1,750 to HECO HVAC & Plumbing of Liberal
• Relocate electrical from roof to come in the east wall with one-inch conduit for compressor – $575 to Lobos Electric of Liberal
• Remove and replace the 22-year-old condenser with a new three-ton Trane and matching evaporator coiland run all new linesas listed in previous items – $6,800 to HECO HVAC & Plumbing
