Cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other similar programs have been floated as part of the Trump Administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”
At a virtual press conference Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Laura Kelly joined a group of fellow U.S. governors and representatives to share the negative effects of such an action.
The Kansas Department of Transportation recently hosted a round of six public meetings in Western Kansas communities, including one in Liberal, as part of the Southwest Kansas Highway Mobility and Expansion Strategy (SWKHMES).
That initiative is a study looking at ways to address highway mobility, safety and accessibility in 43 Southwest Kansas counties. Study teams reviewed survey results from the earlier first round of public meetings, existing transportation conditions and the plan for the study.
USDA has designated two Southwest Kansas counties and two Oklahoma Panhandle counties as Primary Natural Disaster Areas.
This secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans.
A project with Air Products could be one step closer to happening thanks to some action from the Liberal City Commission Tuesday evening.
Liberal City Manager Scarlette Diseker opened the conversation.
"As you all are aware, the City of Liberal has been in talks with the Air Products Helium team for close to a year regarding the purchase of land south of the Mid-America Air Museum. The survey and appraisal have been completed. We have attached the formal Letter of Intent for the commission's approval," Diseker said. "The appraisal came in at $34,000, or $11,564.63 per acre. We don't typically do LOI's with these types of things, but in the case of Air Products, we are."
Firefighters from three Texas County, Okla., communities responded to a fire Monday morning between Goodwell, Okla., and Guymon, Okla.
Along with those communities, firefighters from Texhoma, Okla., at 10:35 a.m. Monday, responded to the fire, and Guymon Fire Chief Grant Wadley said the fire located at 2433 Road Z was noticed by a passerby who noticed smoke coming from the residence.
