Despite existing policy to address legal actions at schools, some request district to create a specific policy for ICE

Discussion regarding the need for a policy in place in case of the appearance of immigration officers on USD 480 property continued before the USD 480 school board at its most recent meeting Monday evening.

A new policy was sent out shortly before Monday’s meeting in regard to the discussion that had been started at the board’s July 21 meeting.

Seward County to host town halls

The Seward County Commission is hosting two upcoming town hall meetings in Liberal and Kismet.

Constituents are invited to join the conversation and help shape the future of Seward County.

The Kismet town hall will take place Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Pavillion at 501 Main Street, and the Liberal town hall will take place Thursday, Aug. 14, in the commission chambers in the Seward County Administration Building at 515 N. Washington Ave.

Both meetings are scheduled to run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Accident in Seward County injures three

Three individuals, including a Kismet man, suffered suspected serious and minor injuries in an accident Tuesday afternoon in eastern Seward County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 2008 Chevy Silverado was traveling southbound on Road O and failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle, a 2024 Kia Carnival, near the U.S. Highway 54 intersection with that road.

Liberal Animal Shelter opens new play area

The staff of the Liberal Animal Shelter has long lobbied for a special area at the shelter where its furry residents can spend some time running around and playing and late last week, that wish finally came true.

Last Friday afternoon, the Liberal Animal Shelter staff and the Liberal Rotary Club officially cut the ribbon on a new dog park area at the shelter. Liberal Rotary Club President Evangeline Penner and Liberal Animal Shelter Director Tara Logan said they were very excited to see the project come to fruition.

Governor Kelly joins multi-state lawsuit challenging Trump Administration’s attempts to terminate critical federal funding to states

The Trump Administration has faced heavy criticism lately regarding disbursement of needed federal funds and late last week, the state of Kansas joined that criticism.

Last Friday, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Kansas joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general and governors for the commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Kentucky in suing the Trump Administration over its unprecedented and unlawful attempts to invoke a single provision buried in the federal regulations to strip away billions of dollars in critical federal funding for states and other grantees.
