Bikes at Billy’s coming Sept. 20

Those looking to explore the area while also helping a great cause will soon have just that option.

Bikes at Billy's will be happening Saturday, Sept. 20 at Billy's Ayr Lanes, with first ride out at 9:30 a.m. and last ride out at 11 a.m. The cost is $25 per registration card, and all the proceeds will go to the Liberal High School Unified Bowling Team.

Last year was the inaugural Bikes at Billy’s event, and coordinator Bill Hill said the inspiration for the event actually had come to him a while ago.

Fire makes house uninhabitable

The Liberal Fire Department was kept busy with a structure fire Saturday afternoon.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 901 E. 2nd Street, Lot #25, shortly after 2:30 p.m. Saturday for a fire in the kitchen of the residence.

The USD 480 school board made rather quick work of the new business on its agenda during its most recent meeting Monday evening.

One of the main items up for discussion was supplemental salary changes.

LARC/DVS receives state funding

Thursday, Gov. Laura Kelly announced more than $32.5 million in state grants to maintain and enhance services for adult and child survivors of crime. The state general funds were granted to nonprofit organizations providing services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence as well as child abuse and neglect.

“I support this use of state funds to ensure survivors of crime receive the services they need from critical organizations,” Gov. Kelly said. “Crime is not just a safety issue – it’s a public health and a quality-of-life issue. We must do our part to build a safer and more resilient Kansas together.”

Burnett becomes a Saint as SID for SCCC

Seward County Community College has been lacking a sports information director (SID) since November, and now, there is a new face in that office with Trey Burnett.

Burnett will be in charge of promoting all the SCCC athletic programs and will be handling live streaming, statistics gathering, game operation, Web site maintenance, social media updates, graphic design, news releases and other record keeping, among other tasks. As he tells it, he is no novice to SID work.
