Some are calling the 2024 Five State Fair one of the more successful in recent history, but with several members lacking on the fair board, future fairs are in danger of not taking place.

Currently, the Five State Fair Board has two members, Mary Rose and Mike Amerin, and a total of 11, five who are appointed by the Seward County Commission and six by the fair association, are needed.

For this reason, Rose said she and Amerin are looking to get more members on the fair board.

“Hold this for a second,” Todd Stanton said as he climbed a ladder and prepared to hang a candle-lit chandelier from the 18th century from his ceiling at his store Uncommon inside the Landmark Center in Downtown Liberal.

The unique chandelier was one of hundreds of items available in his unique shop that offers antiquarian items that range from more than 2,000 years old to items made just a few years ago. And while they are uncommon, his eye for antiquities has been used by other buyers who have mostly been online, and recently Stanton was notified that his eBay store is ranked in the top 5 percent of all antique stores on the world’s most popular bidding site.

World War II, the Space Race, the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, the Cold War, and the new millennium.

All of these are events that have happened in the past century, and local resident LaVon Holt, who turned 100 years old Friday, has borne witness to them all.

“It’s unbelievable, and I feel like it’s a miracle. I’ve been very, very blessed in my life, and I’ve had the Lord looking after me and helping me whenever I need it,” Holt said.
