City discusses housing programs

The City of Liberal offers multiple building programs for citizens to use and recently, the Liberal City Commission got to hear updates on those programs.

Building & Code Enforcement Director Keith Bridenstine was on hand to give the updates, and he began by promising more frequent updates about the programs.

“At the commission’s last meeting, the city manager brought up how we need to bring these updates to the commission earlier, and going forward, we’re going to try and bring these programs before you every December so everything can be ready for the next year in January,” Bridenstine said. “These all have a few changes needing to be approved for this year, which is normal.”

School board engages with LHS staff on classroom challenges

While FlexMod has been relatively successful since its implementation, those in attendance at the meeting agreed there can always be changes and improvements made.

KDOT to host public meeting on K-156 improvements in Kalvesta

The public is invited to attend a meeting on Kansas Highway 156 Pavement Widening and Bridge Replacement Project in Finney County on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kalvesta Methodist Church, 32740 E. K-156, in Kalvesta. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is hosting the event.

KDOT is investing more than $100 million to enhance highway infrastructure in Finney and Hodgeman counties to help address safety concerns and foster economic growth in the region.

Seward County United Way wants to help celebrate Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, couples are looking for ways to take advantage of the love in the air.

Seward County United Way has two opportunities in early February to help the cause, one of which is a giveaway for a fun night for one lucky person.

Prior to that, though, SCUW is starting its Valentines Rose Distribution, with roses in vases being sold for $12 each. United Way Director Patricia Fierro said the goal of this fundraiser was to keep a romantic gesture simple.

Moran helps introduce legislation for small businesses, veteran care

Lawmakers in Washington have been keeping busy recently, and some of that work had some help from Sen. Jerry Moran.

One of Moran’s recent bill introductions was for a permanent tax break for small businesses, which he introduced with 33 colleagues.

“Kansas small businesses support rural and urban communities across the state,” Moran noted in a release from his office. “By making this small business tax break permanent, businesses across the nation will be able to remain open, retain hard-working employees and help the areas around them thrive.”
