Digital directory coming to Restlawn Cemetery

Those with loved ones and friends for whom Restlawn Cemetery is their final resting place will soon have an easier time finding them.

Monday, Seward County commissioners approved a bid from B&G Services in the amount of $52,494 to install a digital directory kiosk at the cemetery north of Liberal on U.S. Highway 83.

Administrator April Warden said the kiosk as well as a small building to house it in, as well as handicap accessibility, is part of the county’s capital improvement plan for Fiscal Year 2025.

Seward County United Way planning for Turkey Trot, kettle campaign

With the Thanksgiving holiday falling on the fourth Thursday in November, the date for that holiday can range from Nov. 22 through Nov. 28.

This year’s Thanksgiving will fall on the last of those days, and no matter where it falls, a local tradition typically takes place the Saturday prior to that date. That tradition returns this year, as Seward County United Way presents its annual Turkey Trot.

Registration for the event starts at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 23 at Hay Rice & Associates in Liberal. Turkey Trot participants can choose from a 5K and a one-mile course or even both. Registration for the 5K is $20, and registration for the one-mile is $10. Kids age 5 and younger can register for free.

KS Insurance Department warns Healthcare Marketplace a target for fraud

The Health Insurance Marketplace is experiencing an increase in the number of potential cases of agent and broker misconduct. Consumers should be on alert and verify changes and enrollments in their health insurance.

“Be very cautious when giving authorization for changes in your health insurance enrollments,” said Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “If you suspect unauthorized activity, report it immediately.”

Governor Kelly announces more than $1.9M investment for airport infrastructure

Air service is part of the backbone of Kansas, and recently, the State of Kansas announced some funding to help with just that.

Friday, Gov. Laura Kelly announced four Kansas communities have secured more than $1.9 million in infrastructure funding to improve local airports.

“The communities secured more than $1.7 million in federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program. Additionally, these projects are receiving almost $200,000 in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund,” Gov. Kelly noted in a release from the State of Kansas. “Kansas’ airports play a vital role in connecting businesses to more opportunities and strengthening local economies. These four projects will improve airport infrastructure while strengthening the state’s transportation network.”

Meade County Craft Fair coming Nov. 16

The weather in Southwest Kansas is now seeing decreasing temperatures reflecting a more seasonable climate for autumn.

The calendar has likewise turned to November, and though Thanksgiving will not be here for another three weeks, many are already getting into the Christmas spirit.

For several years in Meade, holiday enthusiasts have been able to get a head start on shopping, and Saturday, Nov. 16, the community is welcoming back the annual Meade County Craft Fair.
