The Seward County Community College Board of Trustees has officially approved a comprehensive renovation project for French Family Field, marking a significant milestone for the college’s softball program. The $600,000 project, fully funded through private donations, is set to modernize the facility and enhance the experience for student-athletes and fans alike.
The board voted unanimously, 7-0, to approve the project at a special meeting on Tuesday.
The initiative is made possible by the generosity of lead donors, the French Family and Mike Colvin. The project also received major support from the Gould Foundation, Cooper Clark Foundation, Conestoga Energy, alongside the contributions of countless other donors who have invested in the program’s future. This collective commitment ensures the facility improvements will be completed without the use of taxpayer funds, reflecting a strong community-wide investment in the success of SCCC athletics.
“The success of this fundraising campaign reflects the deep connection between our community and SCCC,” Becki Richardson, SCCC foundation director, said. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our lead donors and the many others who stepped up to make this vision a reality. It is truly a community-funded project that will benefit our students for years to come.”
“This project is a testament to the incredible support we receive from our community,” SCCC President Brad Bennett said. “We are deeply grateful to the French family, the Colvin family, and everyone who contributed to this effort. Their generosity allows us to provide our softball team with a top-tier facility that matches the caliber of our student-athletes.”
The planned remodel includes significant upgrades to the field, designed to improve playability and safety. Construction is scheduled to start soon, with the project slated for completion in January.
Cody Cole, associate vice president of athletics, emphasized the impact these renovations will have on the program’s competitive edge.
“Having a facility that our players can be proud of is a game changer,” Cole said. “This upgrade not only improves the daily training environment for our team but also demonstrates our commitment to excellence in every aspect of our athletic department.”
Kimber Cortemelia, SCCC head softball coach, echoed the sentiment of departmental unity and shared pride.
“The improvements being made to French Family Field are a huge win for all of our athletic programs,” Cortemelia said. “Seeing our community come together to support our student-athletes in such a significant way inspires everyone in the department. It sets a standard of excellence we all strive for, and I am excited to see our softball team take the field in this upgraded facility.”
Marvin Chance Jr., chair, SCCC Board of Trustees, said the board’s unanimous support for the project underscores the college’s mission to foster growth and opportunity.
“The board is thrilled to see this project move forward,” Chance said. “It is a privilege to partner with donors who are so dedicated to the success of our students and the vitality of our campus.”
