A local home suffered significant damage to the attic area as the result of a fire Tuesday evening.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 209 E. Cedar Street at 6:30 p.m., according to a release from Liberal Fire Chief Kelly Kirk.

“The first arriving engine reported a light haze of smoke in the house and a small burned area on the ceiling of the kitchen,” Kirk noted in the release. “Firefighters stretched a hose line and began pulling the ceiling where they discovered a significant fire burning undetected in the attic space. The bulk of the fire was knocked down relatively quickly, but due to extensive spread and limited access to hidden burning areas it was not declared under control until 6:59 p.m. The residence suffered significant fire damage to the attic area with water and smoke damage to the interior living areas.  There were no injuries reported.  The fire is believed to be accidental in nature resulting from an electrical issue in the attic.”

The Liberal Fire Department responded with 14 personnel, two engines and one officer’s vehicle.  Other agencies assisting with the incident were the Liberal Police Department, Seward County EMS, Liberal/Seward County Communications Center, Black Hills Energy and Southern Pioneer Electric.
