For some children, getting food on the weekends during the summer months while their parents are working can be tough, and the Liberal Area Coalition for Families (LACF) wants to help with just that with the Summer Weekends Backpack Food Program.
The program will run every Friday throughout the summer through Crosspoint Church at 204 N. Sherman Ave. and is available for children 1 to 18 years old. Coordinator Sarah Mersdorf-Foreman said the idea has been percolating for a while.
“The funding is through the City of Liberal nonprofit application. As a coalition, we work to try to determine needs within the community,” Mersdorf-Foreman said. “So when it was written last summer, the goal was to assist the food pantry in whatever way. In talking with Susanna [Hernandez], we knew there were a few schools who didn't do the backpack food program, and so we decided to fill that gap of getting kids and families food for the weekend, especially over the summer, since the summer food program through the district does not run on the weekends during the summer.”

Monday morning, Seward County Commission Vice Chair Todd Stanton sent a referral to Seward County Attorney Russell Hassenbank regarding the funding of the Seward County Assistant Administrator position with restricted landfill/solid waste funds.
“I am requesting review as the records raise substantial legal questions under Kansas solid-waste statutes, county budget statutes, and county expenditure-control requirements,” Stanton stated in his referral. “The issue is not whether the (Board of County Commissioners) has general control over county expenditures. It does. The issue is whether that expenditure-control authority was exercised within the limits imposed by the solid-waste statutes, the adopted budget, restricted-fund requirements, and Kansas budget law.”

BREAKING - Seward County Treasurer Mary Rose issues statement on request made by Steve Helm for information on those who filed taxes under protest:
“There has been immense speculation surrounding a recent Kansas Open Records request submitted by Commissioner Steve Helm. We can confirm that the request was made by Commissioner Steve Helm in his personal capacity.
I have hired outside counsel, Chris McGowne of McGowne Uhrich P.A. to assist me in this matter as I wanted to ensure I did the proper due diligence before releasing the personal information of anyone in the County.

For about the past half century, the Seward County Sheriff’s office has relied on a reserve team of deputies to provide security at events throughout the community.
Earlier this year, that program was disbanded, and Undersheriff Ryan Roehr is looking for some part-time help at events.
“I’m requesting three part-time certified deputy positions to cover the resulting gap in event management and scene security,” he said at the county commission’s May 18 meeting.
