JOHNSON – Darrel L. Vail, 76, died Sunday, March 29, 2026 at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson.
He was born Oct. 10, 1949 to Lyndell and Margie (Henderson) Vail.
After graduating from Rolla High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served from August 1969 until April 1972.
Upon his honorable discharge, he began a career in trucking. He hauled cattle, the mail to Denver, oil for Koch for 20 years, and after several years retired from Stanton County Road and Bridge Department.
He married Karen Brooks Sept. 16, 1986. She survives.
He enjoyed golfing and crocheting afghan blankets.
He also served on the firing squad for the VFW Post #3684 in Johnson for many military funerals.
Survivors also include children: Lynn, Susan and Heather; stepchildren, Diane and LaDena; brother, Howard; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Vail; and stepson, Jim Jackson.
• Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2026 at the Richfield Cemetery in Richfield with Pastor Erik Miravete presiding. Military rites will be conducted by the Kansas Military Funeral Honor Guard and the Southwest Kansas Veterans Funeral Honor Guard.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.
