The Lady Redskin soccer team came out on top in a double-overtime battle, defeating the Panthers 5-4 Thursday in Great Bend. The match was back-and-forth from the start, with both teams trading momentum and big plays throughout regulation.
Liberal struck first when sophomore Denisse Garcia found the back of the net off a perfectly placed ball to the center from sophomore Ana Vela with 36:46 remaining in the first half.
Shortly after, Garcia assisted sophomore Ashley Batista for another goal. Sophomore Ana Vela then added to the lead, finishing off a corner kick delivered by Batista.
The Panthers responded with two goals, but sophomore Lily Guy closed out the first half strong with a goal off a pass from junior Evelin Tarango.
In the second half, the Panthers battled back, scoring twice to even the match and force overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game came down to the final moments of the second overtime. With just 2:47 remaining, Lily Guy delivered the golden goal off an assist from junior Liliana Santiago to secure the 5-4 victory for the Lady Red.
