“Willy Wonka” follows the story of a young boy from a poor family who dreams of finding one of five golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bar wrappers which will admit him to a magical chocolate factory.
Later this month, Liberal’s Rainbow Players community theater group will bring the story to life on the stage of the Rapid Fit Showcase Theater at Seward County Community College.
The Needles and Friends Quilting Guild is looking for candidates for Quilts of Valor for the upcoming Five State Free Fair.
The deadline to nominate is Friday, July 26, and the ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Seward County Fairgrounds.
Those who have a local veteran who would like to be honored in receiving a handmade quilt from Quilts of Valor can send his or her name, address and phone number to Mary Rose by calling 620-655-1678.
Mary Lloyd made Seward County Community College history in 2014 by being the oldest graduate of the college’s Adult Education program, and last week, she decided to pay it forward for future students with a donation.
A special ceremony was hosted Friday, and Adult Education Director Katie Reck began by reading a statement from former director Travis Combs, who is currently working with the U.S. Department of Education.
As with how many businesses are started, Mark West and Dwayne Devellen saw a need in the Plains community, and from that vision came Hat Creek Butchery.
The butchery started in 2021 and is a USDA-inspected beef and pork processor. Hat Creek Sales, Marketing and Communications Manager Damien Denmark said the business processes beef and pork on site with a USDA inspector at the facility.
“We’re able to have our products labeled as USDA inspected, and we dry age our beef and pork products,” he said.
The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is a major honor among the piloting community, and recently, Liberal added another name to that list.
Last Friday, longtime local pilot Jim Floyd was named as the community’s most recent recipient of the award.
