Bird watching event coming to Arkalon Park

Those interested in ornithology will soon have the perfect opportunity to share that with others.

There will be a birding presentation and nature walk for the community Saturday, July 6 at Arkalon Park. The event will start at 9 a.m. with a presentation from Audubon of Kansas Director Dr. Jackie Augustine, followed by a nature walk at 9:30 a.m. Participants will meet at the bird sanctuary lo in the park’s campground area.

Kiwanis selling peaches to provide coats for kids, scholarships

Peaches are on sale from the Early Risers Kiwanis club.

Peaches are available at the corner of 11th and Kansas across the street from Adventure Bay Water Park.

Crates of peaches are available for $50, or half crates for $30.

These Georgia peaches are available for a limited time.

All proceeds from the sale of the peaches will be used to fund the local Early Risers Kiwanis Coats for Kids and scholarships.

Moran helps secure $1.2 million for SCCC program

Tuesday morning, Seward County Community College welcomed U.S. Senator Jerry Moran to its new West Campus in the former Walmart Neighborhood Market building on Western Avenue in Liberal for a town hall meeting.

Moran discussed federal funding for the college among other topics, and he had some good news for SCCC as part of its trucking program, which will soon occupy part of the West Campus.

The 4th of July holiday is right around the corner, and with that in mind, many people will be buying fireworks as part of their celebrations.

For those who will be purchasing fireworks, Liberal Fire Chief Kelly Kirk said there are a few precautions to keep in mind.

Increased activity of vector-borne diseases identified in Kansas

While ticks and mosquitoes are a natural part of the environment, it is important to know that some may transmit harmful diseases. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) tracks illnesses caused by ticks and mosquitoes, and as of May 29, has received more than 200 laboratory reports of tickborne diseases. Additionally, KDHE has received several reports of tick bites and complaints of high numbers of ticks, which indicates that tick activity and density are increasing and are occurring earlier in the season this year.
