Safety is a top priority in any workplace, and for Seward County leaders, the personal safety and health of each employee is of primary importance.

As part of its strategic planning, it is the Seward County Commission’s objective to provide a safe culture and one that will reduce the number of injuries and accidents to an absolute minimum, with a constant goal of zero accidents and injuries.

The Liberal High School Speech and Drama Team recently competed in Wamego and when the day was done, several students qualified for CFL Nationals.

Those competing at the Nationals Qualifying Tournament will include Katrin Flores, Miguel Nicolas, Zayra Ventura, Emmalee Ward and Ary Mendoza.

Katrin Flores qualified for nationals with 2nd place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Miguel Nicolas qualified with 4th place in Oration. and Zayra Ventura qualified with 5th place in Interpretation of Literature.

CFL Nationals will be in Chicago this year in the last week of May.

LHS Speech and Drama, and some other area schools in Kansas, compete in two different speech and drama leagues. Tournaments under the jurisdiction of KSHSAA, including Liberal’s own hosted tournament, operate in the NSDA league, the National Speech and Debate Association. The Catholic Forensic League is open to public as well as nonpublic schools, and the CFL has attracted smaller rural schools in recent years seeking additional opportunities to compete.

The staff at Liberal High School will see a pair of new positions in its ranks thanks to action taken by the USD 480 school board Monday evening.

The first of these positions was for a scheduler, who will collaborate with school leadership, department chairs, and counselors to develop the master schedule, ensuring appropriate course offerings, teacher assignments, and room allocations. This person will also adjust the master schedule as needed throughout the year to accommodate staffing changes, course demand, and other unforeseen factors, ensure the student schedules are structured to maximize instructional time, academic support, and enrichment opportunities while balancing teacher availability and facility resources.

The South Church of God will be performing “Plot & Promise” dinner theater during two performances April 10 and 11.

Free tickets are available for the event which includes a brisket dinner prior to the performance at the Leader & Times office, 16 S. Kansas Ave., during regular business hours. Seating is limited, so tickets will be given on a first come, first served basis.
