Many in the Sunflower State believe Kansas faces an urgent need to protect and expand Medicaid, and recently, the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas found a creative way for Kansans to unite and raise their voices through art.

AHK recently hosted the first of five stops in communities across Kansas at Liberal’s Baker Arts Center in “Mapping the Gap,” an event combining the creation of art with public education and organizing for access to health care.

The 4th of July holiday might seem a bit far away, but some in town are already making plans for festivities in Liberal, particularly with the parade.

This year's 4th of July Parade will be Friday, July 4, with staging starting at 9 a.m. and the parade itself starting at 10 a.m. Staging will be at Trail Street, and the parade will start there and go north to Light Park, where the parade committee will be hosting a fun day in the park for everyone following the parade. The day in the park will wrap up later that afternoon, and then people can head to Brent Gould Field that evening for the annual Bee Jays baseball game and fireworks show afterward.

Seward County Community College

Seward County Community College wrapped up its spring semester in May, but that doesn’t mean classes have halted. Four summer sessions are currently in progress, with another slated to begin July 7.

It is not too late for students to join Sessions 3 and 4, which began Monday, if they act quickly: students can register and enroll in Session 3 classes through end of day Tuesday, June 3, and in Session 4 classes through end of day Wednesday, June 4.

Celia Stauch does not come from a library background, but after living in Hays for a few years ago and working in the medical field, she moved back home to Plains.

Wanting to become more involved with the community, with the resignation of former director Sara Munn, Stauch decided to take the job of director of Plains Community Library.

In addition to more community involvement, Stauch said upon application, she wanted to bring literacy back to the Plains community.
