Zachary named to Kansas Respiratory Care Council

A department head at Seward County Community has been named to Gov. Laura Kelly’s Respiratory Care Council.

SCCC Director of Respiratory Therapy Janae Zachary practiced the medical art for six years at KU Med Center in Kansas City after graduating from SCCC in 2010, and while she said she loved her job, she did not love the life an urban city.

“We were both from small towns, my fiancé and I,” she said. “We’ve moved back here. That’s where his family is from. I met him while I was in school and came back and worked at Southwest Medical Center, but I felt I was stagnant.”

End Zone Sports Bar & Grill, located at 2867 Centennial Boulevard, hosted its grand opening in late September, and as co-owner Om Patel tells it, the idea for the restaurant had been percolating for a while.

County kept from increasing mill, but maintenance, other challenges still exist

After several budget work sessions, two public hearings, one of which saw several local constituents contest a proposed mill levy hike of nearly 8 mills over the Revenue Neutral Rate, and a motion to pass a resolution to exceed the RNR that died from a lack of a second, in September, commissioners were able to adopt a budget.

The final budget approved by the commission was set at the RNR, the rate at which the same amount of property tax would be collected for Fiscal Year 2025 as FY 2024.

Without tax increase, how will county maintain property, roads?

Though part of the budget cuts for Seward County for Fiscal Year 2025 included not transferring just less than $1.2 million to the Special Highway Fund, Administrator April Warden said the county is still moving forward with some road projects for the upcoming year.

Those projects include an overlay project, which includes 20 miles of asphalt roads in the county, and working on Road O, a gravel road project.
