There have been nine times in history when a vice president has ascended to the presidency without an election. Eight of those occurred when a president dies or was killed in office, and one was when the president resigned.
In most cases, the vice president did a decent job as president, and many served with dignity, creating their own legacy.
Some didn’t.
From fact checkers to partisan online hacks, some numbers being shared about the economy defy the smell test.
The worst of these is the claim that Joe Biden “created” 15 million jobs during his presidency.
Even left-leaning fact checkers title this claim “needs context,” so I’m going to give you some.
Famed “moderate” Kansas Governor Laura Kelly further confirmed her “middle of the road” political ideology last week, throwing her full and unwavering support behind the president who brought you $8 bags of potato chips, and she still had time to give an appreciative pat on the head to the dog who fetched her stick in the 2022 Kansas Governor’s race.
We just celebrated Independence Day, and some of you know that I taught history most of the years I also pastored churches. For this article, I'll put on my history hat to talk about freedom.
Our nation's founders understood history and political philosophy. But primarily, when deciding what they did and didn’t want in a new government, they relied on their background with the British constitutional monarchy. They sought a framework for authority that would protect rights, not direct their lives. Many of the concepts hearkened back beyond Christianity, to the Roman Republic, and Athenian Democracy. (Be careful not to equate republic with Republicans, and democracy with Democrats.)
Our cat, Felix, traveled up north with us for the first time, to visit my parents and their cat, Katie.
I was worried Felix might not like the long drive. My parents’ home, while not enormous, has a basement and an upstairs, all connected by a spiral staircase, and I worried he would become distressed in this new place. There were a lot of new things he could mess with, and I worried he would knock over knickknacks or dig in the plants or hide. So I was anxious from the moment I piled Felix into his carrier.
